When the Pieces Just Come Together

As of today, Jolene and I are over 96K on our first Orchard Pointe book, and we are heading down the home stretch. The first draft should be finished in the next week or so.

One of my favorite things about being a signposter (mostly a pantser, but I'll jot down some plot points and a general idea of the overall story just to make sure I'm staying on course as I write) is that when things are going well, great things happen very organically.

One such thing happened this weekend. We already have a very interesting and well-developed villain in our story (if I do say so myself), but as we are barreling through act three, I felt like there was still one piece missing. And then, in the course of writing a scene where the characters are figuring out something very important about this villain, the conversation they had created the very piece of the villain that we'd been missing. Jolene and I talked about it, and talked through what it meant for the rest of the story, and it really helped solidify where we were going.

I realize I'm being totally vague, but you know I can't spoil such important details about our fun little story before we get a chance to put the whole thing out there.

Well, I guess I spoiled one--there's a villain in it.
